The Essentials, free for everyone
Six short steps that get the basics in order. Stop whenever you like and pick up where you left off.
-
Step 1
Your Will
Where it is, who has the original, and when to update it.
-
Step 2
Your Medical Decision Maker
Who speaks for you if you can't, with a Section 7 mandate.
-
Step 3
Your Health Care Wishes
The care you would and wouldn't want.
-
Step 4
Your Policies and Investments
What you have, and who benefits.
-
Step 5
Your Body
Organ donation, burial or cremation, and any rites.
-
Step 6
Your Trusted People
Who can access your wishes and documents, when it matters.
Private and secure, by design
What you upload to and write in the Dignity Navigator is personal. We take your data privacy extremely seriously.
-
Encrypted with AES-256, and stored safely in South Africa. We use AES-256, the widely trusted gold standard for protecting sensitive information, to encrypt all your answers and documents, and we store them entirely in South Africa, in line with POPIA. Your answers, documents and our backups are kept on Amazon Web Services in Cape Town, copied across at least three physically separate data centres, so they would survive the loss of an entire data centre.
-
What you write and upload is private. Our everyday staff tools have no way to access your answers or documents.
-
Nothing is shared unless you choose. Trusted people you invite are given access to see your answers and documents. You can see when each person last looked, and remove their access at any time.
-
You stay in control. Download or delete your information whenever you like.

Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. The Essentials are free for everyone: your Will, your medical decision maker, your health care wishes, your policies, your body and the people you trust.
What does full access give me?
One payment of R650, once-off, lets you share everything with up to five people you trust and opens every further course, including new ones as we release them. There is no subscription and no monthly or yearly fee.
Do the people I invite have to pay?
No. They create a free account to see what you share with them, and they never pay anything.
Who else can see my answers?
Only the people you invite, and only once they have accepted your invitation. Nothing is shared before you invite someone.
Can DignitySA ever open my answers?
Only in rare, specific circumstances, through a break-glass procedure, and never through our everyday tools. DignitySA holds the encryption keys. That is what lets you reset a forgotten password without losing anything, and lets the people you invite read your answers.
We will only open your answers for one of four reasons: you asked us for help; a verified request after your death, or if you can no longer decide for yourself; a legal order; or a security incident.
One administrator must ask, giving the reason, and a different administrator must approve. Each confirms with a code from their own authenticator, so no one can do it alone. An approved request can be used once, read-only, for at most 60 minutes, and every step and every document opened is recorded.
We will always tell you when a request has been approved. For a request after your death, or if you can no longer decide for yourself, we also tell the people you invited who have accepted.
Outside the Navigator, the keys can be used only by two senior administrators, each with two-step sign-in, and every use automatically alerts both of them.
Do you use my answers for research, funders or marketing?
No. To understand how the Navigator is used, and to report to our funders, we count things like how many members have finished a step. We never use what you write for research, reporting or marketing, and we never sell personal information.
Do I need to be a member of DignitySA?
No. You can use the Dignity Navigator on its own. If you would like to, you can also join DignitySA when you sign up. It is free.
What if I stop part-way?
Everything saves as you go. Stop whenever you like and pick up where you left off, on any device.
Is this legal advice?
No. The Navigator helps you think things through and keep your wishes and documents in one place. Its templates and guides are for information; have important documents checked by a professional.
Who is behind it?
The Dignity Navigator is a service of Dignity SA NPC, a registered non-profit. Every rand from full access goes back into its work.
